Growing up, I have always been involved with athletics. I played field hockey and soccer in high school, and also played Division 3 field hockey at Springfield College, in Springfield, MA. Post college, I began running recreationally to stay fit, and it became a hobby of mine. I mostly ran short distances, with 1-2 half marathons a year. Living in NYC, I run the Brooklyn Half Marathon every year. Three years ago I pushed myself a little too hard during the race and tore the labrum in my right hip. I was devastated and discouraged because I knew I had to take a break from running, which had become such a big part of my life and what made me feel good about my body. I came to HSS at the recommendation of a family friend who had a similar injury in the past, and highly referred me to see Dr. Bryan Kelly.
I met with Dr. Kelly and his team, and they examined my injury and talked to me about my lifestyle and fitness goals. Based on my pain symptoms and the rest I had taken prior to seeing Dr. Kelly, I was prescribed physical therapy at HSS and also was given very helpful advice on running in moderation, and the importance of strength training and cross training. Thankfully I was fortunate enough to build strength in my body to support my hip, and have not had an orthoscopic surgery to repair the tear. Based on the progress I made, I was encouraged to keep building my strength and to continue cross training, but also to get back to running and see how my body feels, and to return to HSS if the pain came back or prevented me from reaching my fitness goals. I am so appreciative for this advice and the conservative but incredibly helpful prescription of extensive physical therapy. Based on the progress made, I am proud to say that this past November I ran my first ever marathon in New York City. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and thankfully my hip still feels strong. I am incredibly grateful for Dr. Brian Kelly and his team for properly evaluating my injury and giving me the guidance and information needed to get back to my active life style. They may not recall who I am because they have helped so many others in similar situations to me, but I will never forget them for helping me get back to the lifestyle I enjoy.
