I was a physical education teacher at the time of my surgery. I had competed in biathlons, triathlons, and hiked the Grand Canyon four times. As time passed, I noticed my ability to walk, even short distances were accompanied with unrelenting pain in my right hip, groin, and buttock. I decided to see Dr. Osric King, a non-surgical orthopedist whom informed me that my MRI showed that I had hip dysplasia. I remember saying, “ now what happens”? Dr. King recommended that I schedule a visit with Dr. Geoffrey Westrich. When I met with Dr. Westrich an x-ray of my right hip revealed the source of my pain. Dr. Westrich showed me what is known as a “bone on bone” condition, and he took the time to explain how to alleviate the pain with an operation known as hip resurfacing. I did not want to live with that constant pain any longer, and I had the operation in April, of 2009.
One of the smartest choices I have ever made! In July of 2009 only three months after the surgery I decided to test out my new hip. I went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for a hike. I did not have any pain or difficulty walking on some of the toughest terrain on the earth. I swim four days each week during the winter, and I ride my bike during the warmer months about four- five days each week. I have maintained this exercise routine for the past six years, pain free. I am proud to say, “ I am back in the game”, and it feels wonderful! I will always be thankful to Dr. Westrich, for his expertise in joint replacement surgery, and the premier care that I received at Hospital of Special Surgery during my stay there.
