My son Vincent was always a very competitive soccer player and was about 7 yrs old he started complaining of ankle pain. We thought nothing of it, changed his cleats and hoped it would go away. As time went on, the pain worsened and I noticed he was not himself on the field. Vincent had gotten slower, ran with a limp, and started pulling away from soccer. After 2 different doctors diagnosed him with a bilateral tarsal coalition we panicked. We live in NJ and our doctors here told us orthotics, rest, ice, and basically when he was about 15, his bones would fuse and hopefully the pain would go away!! He was now 8 or 9 yrs old!!
I researched high and low and I was not going to let my son be crippled and in pain. I found Dr. Scher at Hospital for Special Surgery and he worked wonders on my son! He recommended surgery, and while I was afraid , I put my trust in Dr. Scher.
Vincent was 10 when he had the first foot done. We prepared for Vincent to be in pain and off his feet for 12 weeks. To our amazement his cast came off in 2 weeks and 2 days later my son was walking!! Of course it was limited and he limped, but he walked!! He started therapy right away and with very little pain and a lot of determination, he was back to Soccer and Ice Hockey in about 10 weeks. Vincent had his other foot done in August and again Dr. Scher worked his magic!! 2 weeks after surgery he was walking, he had very little pain.
Vincent got the all clear about 2 months after surgery and the next day he went skating and jumped like a crazy man on his cousins trampoline! Vincent is back to being a confident happy kid, he is pain free and he dreams of playing in the NHL on the Rangers! We will always be grateful to Dr. Scher, and the amazing nurses and staff at Hospital for Special Surgery for taking such great care of Vincent. There are no words how I feel watching him play and run without limitation or pain.
