Cathy Jane Bowes

Oak Island, NC

Over forty years ago my car was hit by a drunk driver and both of my legs were broken and had compound fractures. My left leg was extremely mangled and it ended up being crooked and inches shorter than the other. After 15 years I had a tibial osteotomy to correct the length but the knee damaged could not be repaired and the knee continued to deteriorate. After retiring, I finally got tired of the pain and being unable to be able to do things with my family and friends. Because of my leg history, I found few physicians in my area who would treat me and those that would wanted to do 2 operations, one to take out the plate in my leg and the other to replace the knee. With all the operations I had, I didn't want to go through two more. My daughter who lives in NYC suggested I try HSS. I called and was able to get an appointment with Dr. McLawhorn. It seems the stars were on my side. I flew to NYC, met with him and he agreed to take me on as a patient and do one operation, not two. He explained why he only need to do just one and sent me immediately to have my knee cultured to make sure there was no infection.

I flew back to NYC for the operation and stayed 10 days. I can't believe how little pain I had and how quickly I healed from the operation. He used a computer to make sure my leg was aligned with my hips. He answered all my questions, explaining everything he did during the surgery including moving my kneecap up some. He is a great doctor, treating me with respect and dignity. I have had a 360 turn about in my life. It has only been 4 months and I can walk for miles in NYC to shop with my daughter (bad for finances though) or on the beach where I live with no pain, I ride in bike marathons, and can get up off the floor at yoga, which I couldn't do before. It is such a joy for me to be active or walk for after 40 years of being a 'coach potato'. Thank you Dr. McLawhorn!
