On the Saturday before Mother’s Day, I was running in a race that finished on a high school track. I was in lane number one and kicking as hard as I could to make my desired time. Suddenly, a child walked onto the track right in front of me. I raced right over him and together we tumbled onto the track. After discovering that the boy was OK, I started to focus on the pain in my leg. The back of my right leg felt as if someone had put a knife into it. I limped to the car and drove home. By end of the day, I felt OK. On Monday, I got on a plane and went to a conference in Orlando. When I woke up on Wednesday, my leg from the back of the knee all the way up was completely black and blue. Something was definitely wrong.
I made an appointment to see Dr. Ranawat. Dr. Ranawat was out that day, but his PA, Rachel, took a look at the back of my leg and ordered an MRI. After the MRI, I headed home and as soon as I pulled into my driveway, I got a call letting me know that I had completely torn my hamstring with all three tendons being displaced from the bone and I needed surgery. The following week, Dr. Ranawat performed surgery reattaching the hamstring. I began physical therapy at a local facility and was soon able to resume routine activities. My recovery went well, but I was hesitant to resume running afraid that my right leg was not strong enough. Dr. Ranawat continued to push me to work my leg harder. After passing a stress test, I was confident to resume running. I registered for a half marathon and began to slowly resume training. After training for 10 weeks, I completed the race and was delighted with my time; forgetting that there had ever been an injury to my right leg.
I have nothing but respect and admiration for Dr. Ranawat, his staff and the folks at HSS. Dr. Ranawat has taken the time to explain the surgical process, options, recovery period, etc. He is always just a phone call or email away for any question or concerns that we might have. My daughter sings his praises to anyone who will listen. She credits him for motivating her to resume her athletic activities with confidence. After my hamstring experience, I feel the same way. Thank you, Dr. Ranawat.
