I am a pretty active 64-year-old. I play softball, pickleball, run and participate in several competitive golf leagues. I had been experiencing some groin pain for a while, especially when running. I thought it was a hernia issue that I would address in the winter after my sports were done. Unfortunately, I partially tore my hamstring last May and the recovery time was 8 weeks. I decided to have hernia surgery at that time and recover from both at the same time. Several months later when I was fully recovered, I tried to run again and I still had pain. A local orthopedic doctor took an x-ray and immediately told me that I needed a new hip. I was stunned.
My wife and I knew that we needed to get a second opinion from the best - HSS. My wife had her knee replaced there a decade ago and I was so impressed with the entire hospital. We researched surgeons and decided to see Dr. McLawhorn. He agreed on the diagnosis that I needed a new hip. He listened extremely well, addressed all concerns, especially timing, since I wanted to be ready for golf season. He was very clear that it was my decision to make. He also suggested to do some pre-operative physical therapy to strengthen my lower body. That was brilliant advice.
I decided to have the surgery at HSS Orthopedics with Stamford Health because I could get in sooner and start healing. He and his staff explained every part of the procedure. Every single person that I interacted with was friendly, professional and caring. The instructions that I received were easy to follow. I recovered very well. I followed all instructions and literally saw progress every day. Dr. McLawhorn told me that I would be playing golf without pain in three months and he was right. My hip feels great. I still do some PT every day to finish the healing process.
I am grateful to Dr. McLawhorn for giving me my active lifestyle back. I highly recommend him and his team.
