In all our years of travel to the worlds wild places I sustained a serious injury only once. It happened on a trip to Thailand with my husband. We were on our way to the cave of bat-eating snakes in Kow Sok National Park. While stepping off a long tail boat I caught my right foot in the handle of a duffel bag, went over the side head first and hung upside down like an animal in a snare. I broke my ankle and dislocated my foot which looked like it was on backwards.. Nine hours later by boat, pickup truck and van we reached the hospital in Puket where the orthopedic surgeon was waiting for me. Luckily it was a brand new facility that had all the equipment for the operation I needed.
On my return home I went to Dr. Robert Rozbruch at HSS. He commented on what a beautiful job the Thai surgeon did. He said he'd never seen stitches like mine before and wanted to remove them himself to see how they were done. A year later he removed the metal plate and screws. He did a great job and my leg is perfect. It has never bothered me since.
In 2002 in the wilds of Brooklyn I tripped on the sidewalk and broke my elbow. HSS to the rescue! Dr. Rozbruch fixed it. I have full use of the arm and the elbow has never bothered me since. I'm a children's book illustrator so I am especially grateful to Dr. Rozbruch and HSS. The hospital staff is first rate, too. Friendly, caring and efficient. I highly recommend HSS.
