After several surgical consults to address long-standing and worsening ankle instability and arthritis (complicated by an old, poorly set tibial fracture), I chose Dr. Cody based on her experience and HSS patient reviews and videos. Dr. Cody was very thorough in her explanations of the initial diagnostic findings. She quickly confirmed the primary issue would not improve with additional physical therapy, which previously had been somewhat effective. Initially, my situation appeared likely to require a “routine” ankle fusion; however, Dr Cody noticed another issue stemming from the old injury and reconsidered her approach to the surgery. As it turned out, I did not require a fusion (great news!), and Dr. Cody corrected additional issues that had developed over the years, which were contributing to the worsening picture.

From my perspective, Dr. Cody made the right calls and did a “perfect” surgery. The recovery was a bit of a marathon, but not because I was in a lot of pain. It was simply slower than expected - but having experienced it, I now understand and appreciate how complicated foot/ankle physiology is, and that the system needs enough time to recover fully and safely.

I am now one year post-op, having spent the spring and summer diligently working with an excellent physical therapist who works closely with Dr. Cody. While I have made a “full recovery”, my overall strength is still improving with continued exercise. Previously, I was taking 600mg ibuprofen 3x/day (almost daily); now I rarely need it. I had a chronic limp and atrophied calf muscle for years, which have completely resolved, and I’m back to enjoying my favorite activities: hiking and walking, lap swimming, and biking. I’ve decided not to ski this year, but will be snowshoeing with my family next week in the Italian Alps!

Dr. Cody is confident, straightforward and positive. She focuses on how an injury/condition is limiting a person’s own “normal” lifestyle and expectations, and works to restore/improve that as much as possible. Finally, if this surgery was advised again, I wouldn’t be happy about being laid up again for several months, but I would do it.
