I met Dr. Alex McLawhorn in 2019, when he replaced my husband’s hip (very successfully!), and I began consulting with him in 2022 for my right knee. I had torn it back in 2000 skiing in France, and already had 2 arthroscopic surgeries on it — microfracture in 2000 and chondroplasty with partial meniscectomy in 2015. After that second surgery my life was never the same, as knee pain became increasingly more limiting.

Dr. McLawhorn treated me conservatively with cortisone shots and multiple rounds of physical therapy, but by mid-2024, I was unable to even take mile-long walks. X-rays showed stage 4, bone-on-bone, and at that point we agreed that it was time for a total knee replacement.

The first few weeks after surgery were tough, but Dr. McLawhorn and his staff had prepared me on what to expect. He and his staff were always available and helpful with my questions/concerns. At his suggestion, I rented a stationary bicycle which I used 4-5 times a day, and which I credit with being enormously important to my healing.

It’s now 6 months after the TKR surgery and I keep forgetting that I have a titanium/plastic replacement. I’ve regained at least 130 degrees of flexion, the swelling is practically gone, the scar is barely visible and I have NO pain. I won’t be skiing the Alps anymore (I’m close to 80), but I’m enjoying a normal, active life gardening, traveling, and even dancing!

Life is good. And Dr. McLawhorn is the absolute best!
