At 59 years old, I had a total hip replacement (my first ever surgery) on August 8, 2017. Having skied, played competitive tennis and ran most of my life, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my right hip (left hip was fine). I could no longer run or play tennis without pain. I wanted a surgery that would allow me to continue to play the sports that I had enjoyed for years. I met with Dr. Danyal Nawabi in June of 2017 and he reviewed my options. He scheduled me for a total hip arthroscopy on his birthday.

Dr. Nawabi’s approach for rehabilitation was very conservative, with limited weight-bearing for the first few weeks, physical therapy, and gradual increase in the use of the new joint. It all went smoothly progressing to increased levels of walking and hiking over the following 6 months. I then returned to the tennis court and I was thrilled with the results. All of my movement was back and I am now back to playing 2 or 3 times a week with no issues. 16 months since surgery, I have no perception that I have an implant in my right hip; it’s smooth as silk. I have replaced my distance running with biking and hiking and love the results. I am so thankful to Dr. Nawabi and his team at HSS for giving me my life back.
