Zak Belkebir

Astoria, NY

My name is Zak Belkebir, and I am 54 years old. I have been very active all my life and competed in every sport I had a chance to participate in. I played competitive soccer for over 30 years, and when I couldn't play anymore I picked up tennis and started running short and mid-distance races. I also go to the gym at least 5 times a week.

Things came to a sudden halt in 2015. While jogging I felt a pop in my left hip. long story short, after 5 months of trying to figure out what happened, I came to the conclusion that I needed a hip replacement or hip resurfacing. I saw two doctors who both recommended a hip resurfacing. I immediately started my research to learn more about the procedure and find out who the best doctors were in the country who perform this kind of surgery. Within seconds, Dr. Su's name was all over the place.

I scheduled my first visit with Dr. Su. He was very clear and thorough. I felt very comfortable and was convinced that he is going to be my doctor. The problem was the first appointment available was for another seven months. During that time I started reading all the other reviews and I watched a complete hip resurfacing surgery that Dr. Su performed online (my wife thought I was crazy). I kept on going to the gym and worked out through the pain up until the day before surgery, May 5th, 2017.\

The surgery was a huge success. I stayed at the hospital for one night and walked out with nothing but a cane - amazing! I started home physical therapy on day 3. I went to the gym one week after surgery. I started walking without a cane 2 weeks after surgery. I went back to work 3 weeks after surgery. I took my first full spin class 4 weeks after surgery. I enjoyed playing a full match of tennis 3 months after surgery. Now, just over six months after surgery, I am happy to say I am back in the game 100%. I average 15 to 20 mile runs a week and preparing for my first half marathon in March 2018 after a 3 year absence.

I have to thank a lot of people who helped me get my life back. Top of the list of course is Dr. Su - you are an amazing human being. Also, to the staff at his office, you are all wonderful professionals. And what can I say about HSS, top notch hospital. Thank you to Brittany at Star therapy on 56th St. Thank you to everyone who wrote about their stories - you inspired me and you made it easy for me to make my decision to go ahead with my surgery.

Dr. Su said that my right hip will eventually need the same procedure, so you will hear from me again in a couple years.

Thank you all.

Zak
