I was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis of the left hip in June of 2014. The pain was sudden and impacted my quality of life immediately. After seeing some "local" doctors and surgeons I felt inclined to visit Hospital For Special Surgery for a final opinion. Although the diagnosis was the same, a total hip replacement, my comfort level improved dramatically. Dr. Michael Parks not only gave me a fantastic explanation of what may have caused my condition but more importantly put me at ease about the procedure to replace my hip. He went into great detail about the different approaches. He explained how a doctors experience and success rate in a particular approach is more important than which approach is ultimately used. I mostly appreciated all of the technical and engineering related information he provided, as this is my background.

I decided to postpone my surgery for some time, which I realize now was a mistake. I had my surgery on January 13th 2015. The surgery went textbook and I was home in 2 days. I was "Back in the Game" much sooner than I had anticipated. I look forward to start taking up hiking as well as other outdoor activities this spring. Unfortunately for me, I have also been diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis in my right hip as well so another hip replacement is inevitable in the very near future. My previous experience at HSS has taken all of the anxiety, fear and anticipation out of the equation for when the time comes for the next procedure. Dr. Michael Parks will be my surgeon and the great staff at HSS will get me back in the game again, no question.
